Black Friday Outreach

Black Friday is the Friday following Thanksgiving Day in the United States. Traditionally the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, many retailers open extremely early, with most of the ‘big box’ retailers typically opening at 5AM or even earlier.

Called Black Friday because it is the day that the momentum of holiday shopping for many retailers turns annual sales from negative to positive or ‘in the black’. Shoppers line up outside the front doors as early as midnight to save money on select loss leaders which are sometimes available in a limited numbers.

To an outreacher Black Friday represents a prime opportunity to demonstrate God’s love with no strings attached. Last year Driven Youth Ministry workers served coffee to dozens of cold shoppers lined up outside stores early on this busiest shopping day of the year.

On Friday November 26, 2010 a team of Living Word Driven Youth Ministry interns arrived at selected stores early in the morning and simply offered hot coffee or cocoa to those waiting outside in the cold. As with other servant evangelism efforts, the Black Friday outreach is not intended to receive donations, lead the shoppers in a prayer of salvation or gain membership in the church; it is simply to share God's love in a simple, practical way.
