Make a Difference Day

On Make A Difference Day, Saturday October 23, dozens of Living Word Christian Center outreachers will conduct an eco-friendly community service project to eradicate buckthorn trees at the Brooklyn Park owned Edinburgh USA Golf Course.

The buckthorn plant is pervasive. It out-competes native plants for nutrients, light, and moisture, degrades wildlife habitat and threatens the future of forests, wetlands, prairies, and other natural habitats. It also contributes to erosion by shading out other plants that grow on the forest floor. Buckthorn lacks "natural controls" like insects or disease that would curb its growth.

This project will help to remove the invasive buckthorn by cutting the stem at the soil surface and then treating the stump with an herbicide to prevent re-sprouting. 'We appreciate what Living Word can do to help', said Edinburgh USA Superintendent Tom Fisher.

Workers will gather in the Living Word atrium at 8:45AM on Saturday October 23, leave for the project at 9AM and finish by noon. Participants are encouraged to wear warm clothing, bring gloves and hand tools (trimmers, loppers and brush cutters) if they have them.
